are you preparing baby formula the RIGHT way?

As I am on maternity leave taking care of my baby boy- I have come across some technical issues with preparing formula for him. So I decided to get some info and jot down some tips for other moms feeding their baby formula.

1. Wash your hands before handling anything.
2.Sterilize all utensils necessary for feeding after washing them with warm water and soap (this includes bottle, nipples, caps, etc.) Nowadays it is so easy and economical to sterilize. There are all types of sterilizers, no need to steep bottles in a boiling pot of water anymore.
3. Boil water. On all formula company websites, it states that filtered or bottled water are not adequate replacements for boiled water. I boil approximately one liter of water. Once it cools, I start adding it in to the amount of bottles I will use during the day. The point is to keep the preparation process run smoothly and quickly, not to stash water filled bottles for weeks.
4. When you are ready to prepare a bottle for your baby and you are using powdered formula, fill the cap with formula. Make sure you are not packing it in or sliding the cap along the sides of the formula container. This will add too much formula for the necessary amount of water and will be adding more nutrients and calories than what your baby needs.
5. My son does not always drink even number of ounces in one feeding. It bothers me to have to throw away an ounce or more. So I measured how much is in one cap of Similac formula by pouring it into a sterilized measuring cup used for medication and found it to be 3 teaspoons. ( I am not sure if this is the same serving size for all formula brands). So, when I want to make him an odd number of ounces of formula, I use the cap and 1.5 tsps to make the desired amount.
* You are not supposed to use leftover formula for the next feeding as your baby's saliva can contaminate the formula during a feeding. Also, discard whatever formula is left over after one hour has passed after its preparation.
6. Once you added the correct amount of formula to the bottle, shake it up and serve!

** I am not advertising for Similac; it just happens to be the type of formula that works the best with my son's digestion and I find their website to be really informative. Also, above all else, consult with your baby's pediatrician and follow their recommendations in case of conflicting information.
